Hurricane Ale

Here is the latest addition to the beer squadron. This one I call the ‘Hurricane ale’ this is a dark amber ale, it also marks my first experiment using crystal malt. Here is the recipe.

1 John Bull Bitter Kit.

500grms Crystal Malt

1oz Sytrian Golding Hops

300grm dark malt

300grms Pale Malt

450grms Glucose powder.

Gervin Ale yeast.

The first thing to do is steep the crystal malt, this is done by heating 1l of water to around 65C, then adding the crystal malt. Leave this sit for around 20mins.

Remove the malt from the water add the glucose powder, pale and dark malts and hops. The water is then boiled for around 10 mins, don’t boil any longer otherwise the hop oil will evaporate off.

Add the hoppy malt liquid to the ferementer then add the beer kit and make up in the usual way.

The yeast used is Gervin English Ale yeast.

I tried this straight out the barrel and it had a morish taste then, so it’ll be interesting to see what it tastes like when it’s fully ready.
