Homemade Lager(Badger Lager)

This was my first attempt as customising at basic lager kit. It has now reach semi maturity, old enough to sample at least. This was the recipe I followed.

1 Brewmaker Basic Lager Kit
1kg Glucose powder
15g Hallertauer Mittelfrüh hops
Saflager S-23.
OG 1038 FG 1008
With this recipe I steeped the hops in 500ml of near boiling water(water that had boiled a couple of minutes ago). I left the hops to steep for about 10mins, in the hot water then strained the hops through a muslin bag, into brew bin then made up the kit as per instruction but replacing the yeast.
By using a proper lager yeast, I used Saflager S-23. You get a much cleaner tasteing lager. It is critical when using Saflage S-23, that it is brewed at a constant temperature as close to 13C as possible. I have a control unit that allows me to control the temperature to within a degree, so I was able to keep the temp between 13-14C. I takes about 2 weeks to finish fermenting. For the last 3 days I added some Brupaks beer clear, clear the beer.
I sampled the lager after 1 month of bottling. It was excellent; the taste was clean, there was a slight hoppy taste to it, but I would have preferred a little more hops. I had a slightly sharp taste after a couple of pints, but I think that was because it is still fairly young. It has definately produced a good clean taste by using Saflager yeast.
For future I think I shall use 25g of hops and simmer them in 1l of water for 10mins.

Updated a few months later.

This has definately improved with ages, and with all lagers is best served cold. I think it finished somewhere around 5%ABV so is quite a strong lager. I think using the Saflager S-23 yeast has given it a dry taste. If you don’t like a dry finish to your lager than adding about 100grm of pale malt would make it a little less dry. Otherwise it has definately been a good lager recipe.

This sounds like a beer recipe for my taste, although I think I will consider your tip to make it not so dry. Thanks for sharing all your beer stuff here…
