Review of Yorkshire Terrier Bitter

Posted in Beer Kit Reviews on June 29th, 2006

The story goes that one of the original brewers in York used to tie his pet dog alongside the mash Tun. It remained loyal to him until through old age the dog died. The brewer believed his dog’s spirit lived on and developed a mischievous and characterful presence. Yorkshire Terrier continues the story and it’s lively character reflects all that is good in man’s best friend.

Woodforde’s Wherry Homebrew beer Review

Posted in Beer Kit Reviews on June 12th, 2006
Back in October 2005 I wanted to make a decent pint to enjoy over Christmas I chose Woodforde’s Wherry Bitter. The unusual name comes from sailing barges which were once common on the Norfolk waterways.
Wherry bitter is an amber coloured, smooth beer with a distinctly hoppy nose and a well-balanced palate. Woodforde’s Wherry Bitter won CAMRA’s “Champion New Brewery Beer of Britain Award” back in 1990/91.
Coming out at an ABV of 4.5%. As an ale it is a superb seesion beer not to strong so you can enjoy a few of them . As a kit it was dead easy to make, it was this kit that introduce me to the idea of rehydrating the yeast before adding it to the wort.
I left if for 3 months before drinking and it was a superb pint.
Highly recommended.

Woodefordes Great Eastern Review

Posted in Beer Kit Reviews on June 5th, 2006

My latest venture homemade beer venture is a another from the Woodefordes stable, this time the Great Eastern Ale. Great Eastern is billed as being ‘a delicious, full flavoured, golden ale made with a blend of quality pale and lager malts.’ Originally brewed by Woodforde’s to commemorate 150 years of The Great Eastern Railway in Norfolk.

Now I’ve only just bottled this brew, but I think sampling the beer straight out the bin gives a good idea of what the finished beer will taste like. This one as it says on the tin is tastes quite a light beer, with a hoppy character but still is quite malty. I think it will make a great summer beer out in the garden with a BBQ, it’s not too strong so you won’t get wobbling leg syndrome too quickly.
