Review of Yorkshire Terrier Bitter
The story goes that one of the original brewers in York used to tie his pet dog alongside the mash Tun. It remained loyal to him until through old age the dog died. The brewer believed his dog’s spirit lived on and developed a mischievous and characterful presence. Yorkshire Terrier continues the story and it’s lively character reflects all that is good in man’s best friend.
This is what the box says at least, this beer was brewed as a test for my new toy the cornelius keg. It’s an interesting beer to make, you get a bag of pellets which you throw boiling water on. These are of course the hops that add a lot of the flavour, when you only put a splash of water, these break up and look like slime in the bottom of the bin. You also get a can of malt extract and a bag of spray dried malt. It’s a good idea to add the spray dried malt into bin after the 15mins steeping period. The hot water means the malt dissolves a lot more easily than if you add the malt to the cold water.
With this brew I gave the wort a good sloshing to mix a lot of oxygen into it before adding the yeast. This did work well the yeast started ferment within a couple of hours and brewed out fairly quickly.
Yorkshire Terrier is a pale ale, it makes a good summer ale as it’s not to string mine is about 4%ABV it has a hoppy character, but is not overdone. Especially when served with the cornelius keg, you should get a first class pint.
